Internet / World Wide Web / Bluetooth / Wi-Fi

    In short, the internet is what makes up our everyday lives and for most of us, is reliable for many decisions and wonders in life. Although it may seem like a simple search engine that can get you from one tab to another, the internet is realistically a wide set of protocols that humans created and worked on in order for us to gain access to the World Wide Web. The intelligent individuals who founded the internet are Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn. 1983 is the official release year of the internet seeing as this was the first year people could successfully communicate via computers. However, the internet was initially used for government researchers to share information.

    The World Wide Web, also known as WWW, can indicate all public websites that different users across the world can access on their own devices via the internet. In March of 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in Switzerland. Tim Berners-Lee worked for an organization called CERN. Originally, the World Wide Web was used as a tactic to make the process of sharing information easier for many scientists around the world. In today’s world, the World Wide Web is not just exclusive to scientists seeking to share information. It is open to everyone and makes communicating and sharing general information much easier.

    Although it may seem like they are the same, the World Wide Web and the internet are two different things. The internet is the foundation that the web builds onto. The internet’s job is to connect everything together and get it running smoothly. The role of the World Wide Web is to display the different websites that are published and allow access to everyone around the world. Even though they both have their own individual purposes, they still intertwine with one another in order for there to be stability online.

    Following the creation of the World Wide Web in 1989, the foundations for the WWW were developed in order to manage stability of the web. One of these foundations include the very first website. The designing of the first website looks very different than what most websites look like today. It lacks color and is outdated assuming that it was created in 1991. The first website is still up for users to browse and serves as a basic explanation of the World Wide Web. The URL for the first website is: http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

    The connection between Hedy Lamarr and the internet is a very important one, seeing as she is the reason why people have access to WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth communication systems. Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and is known as “the mother of WiFi”. Hedy developed WiFi along with George Anthiel, and its original purpose was to serve as a secret communication system. WiFi is now globally known as the reason we can use wireless technology. Hedy’s impact on today’s world is so massive that Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck released a song about her this year titled “This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr”. Many believe that Depp wrote the song about how Hedy was a genius, trapped in a persona of a movie star.


In the mid 1990s, a dutch engineer Jaap Haartsen found a wireless way to connect local devices using low-power radio frequencies. Although Haartsen was the founder of bluetooth, it was Jim Kardach who officially named this wireless technique “Bluetooth”. The history of the name bluetooth goes all the way back to the year 958. During this year, King Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson united Denmark and Norway together. The reasoning behind his “Bluetooth” nickname was his dead tooth which turned a dark blue color. Many people do not realize that this actually is the origin of the name.


WiFi, originally called Wireless Fidelity, is a completely wireless technology that most iPhones, iPads, computers and other devices use in order to communicate. Wifi is commonly compared to how radios work in the sense that both can pick up signals through the air in order to work. The founder of Wifi is Vic Hayes and he chaired the IEEE 802.11 committee in 1997. As previously stated, Hedy Lamarr played a very large role in the creation of Wifi, but Vic Hayes is the man who made Wifi feasible to the public. According to Verizon, the term “Wifi” was created because the wireless industry was looking for an user-friendly name, rather than letting it be known as IEEE 802.11

BW -> Color

  For my Black & White to Color project, I had to select an image of myself to completely transform and re-design. First, we had to grey out the image and remove all of the color that was previously there. For my image selection, I chose a selfie that had some neutral tones, and pops of color throughout. I did this for a reason because I knew that when I added color to the images, it was going to bring it more to life! These are the final products of my Black & White to Color project. I have to say, while it was a difficult project in the beginning, it became much more enjoyable and playful once you got the hang of it. Photoshop is not an easy platform to learn, which was understood and accepted before completing this project! Overall, I feel that the best outcome was the Square image. It has the most pops of color and is very vibrant.

Business Cards

For my first business card, I took inspiration from one of my favorite artists, Olivia Rodrigo. The business card is based off of her first studio album, "SOUR". On a personal level, the album has impacted my life in a variety of ways. The business card is mostly based off of her album cover. It seems to be a trend that I find my favorite musical artists and their work to have a rather large impact over my work in this class. Moving onto the process of using Indesign, it was definitely a little difficult at first, especially trying to space out each number and letter. In comparison to other Adobe platforms, I wouldn't say it was interesting because tools from Illustrator were also incorporated into the platform as well. Overall, I am pretty proud of how this came out, and if you're a fan of Olivia Rodrigo you would understand the general concept of the business card.
